What if...? Is there a difference between reacting or responding?
Now you may be saying to yourself, ‘it’s the same meaning, just a different word’. Is it?
Does each word create the same feeling inside? We tend to ‘react’ when something inside of us is triggered, be it a look, a comment, a physical gesture towards us.
Our protective instinct is to react in order to defend an aspect of ourselves that feels threatened. What is threatened? Our beliefs, our religion, our opinion, our sense of emotional or physical safety.. basically anything that we align ourselves with…
The ability to ‘respond’ requires awareness of all of the above. You consciously choose to breathe, to feel what is happening inside and then you choose how you will respond or not respond.
Try it today…. When you feel triggered, take a few breaths and choose your response. Perhaps it will carry a different outcome for you..
