Homeopathy’s Ancient Roots

Homeopathy is the central branch of the three branches of western medicine as described by Hippocrates, the founder of Western medicine in 500 BC.

Hippocrates believed that medicine should follow three laws of healing. The first law, “Vis Medicatrix Naturae,” emphasizes taking action at the first signs of symptoms. This includes resting, staying hydrated, breathing fresh air, moving lightly, and supporting the body’s functions. This approach is now known as Naturopathy.

If these initial measures aren’t enough for complete healing, the second law applies: “Similia Similibus Curentur,” or “like cures like,” which is the basis of Homeopathy. Hippocrates suggested finding natural remedies that are similar to the individual’s symptoms, considering both body and mind, much like in traditional practices such as Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). He recommended using very small amounts of these natural tinctures as tonics to support overall health.

The Hippocratic Oath requires all medical practitioners to promise to “Do No Harm” and be useful without interfering, summarized as “Primum non nocere.”

Only when the body’s natural healing responses, like fever or diarrhea, become life-threatening do we turn to the third approach: “Contraria Contraribus Curantur,” or Allopathy. This method uses opposite treatments, often prefixed with “anti,” such as antibiotics or antidepressants, to suppress the body’s natural healing processes and manage symptoms.

Since the rise of antibiotics after World War I, Allopathy has become the dominant form of Western medicine. However, it was always meant to work alongside Naturopathy and Homeopathy. Without these two approaches, treatment may be incomplete, and simply suppressing symptoms with Allopathy can lead to unwanted side effects.

Classical Homeopathy offers an understanding of how the body, mind and emotions are all expressions of one internal “state”, one organizing holistic principle or “soul” (as defined by Plato).
